Greetings fellow chairs, distinguished delegates, and honorable guests!
I am Nathan Baek, a high school junior at Gyeonggi Suwon International School. I am thrilled to serve as Head Chair of the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) for UNISMUN’s upcoming March Conference. For the past three years, I participated in MUN conferences as a delegate, chair, and secretariat. Harnessing the skills I developed through MUN, I was recently named a Rise Global Winner for my work in the field of education.
To tackle this year’s theme (What can we do to bring balance to the growing asymmetries of power?) we must put our heads together to form unity and heal the incision on the fabric of our society. We all encounter imbalances in power dynamics from our local to international communities. It’s nearly impossible to topple this wall alone, but we can slowly break it down with unity and action.
The UNSC stands at the core of the UN’s effort to mend post-Cold War relations and ease friction between countries in conflict. As we live in an era of hyper-polarization, the UNSC acts as a speed bump that slows down the impending ‘war armageddon.’ This committee is one of the few places where major military powers gather to prevent World War III.
The topics for the Security Council are the following:

The issue of redistribution of global resources.

The issue of the federalization of fragile and failed states.
-
The issue of the application of Responsibility to Protect.
In the recent wake of international conflicts, the topics may sound broad and overwhelming to approach. But we tackle them one by one to build quality resolutions.
I encourage everyone to use their authentic voice to represent delegations. Remember, MUN is not an exam, you are here to be yourself and to develop skills.
Deputy Chair
Erica Lim
Hello to fellow chairs, distinguished delegates, and honorable guests!
I am Erica Lim, a junior at Seoul International School, and I am honored to serve as the deputy chair of this year’s UNISMUN Security Council. UNISMUN is my 11th official MUN participation, and my first as a chair. MUN has taught me many valuable skills, such as public speaking, collaboration, and developing creative solutions to relevant global issues. I hope all the delegates participating can learn such skills in UNISMUN as well.
The Security Council (SC) is like a guardian angel of international peace and security. The council calls upon the parties to a dispute to settle it by peaceful means and recommends methods of adjustment or terms of settlement. This year’s theme, “What can we do to bring balance to the growing asymmetries of power?” , is a theme that directly concerns the SC, as power imbalances lead to inequality, inequality leads to conflict, and conflict ultimately threatens the very peace the council fights to sustain. In the light of recent conflicts, this theme is now more relevant than ever, as such recent conflicts often resulted from imbalances of powers between parties. In this conference the SC will address three conflicts relating to this theme.
They are as follows:

The issue of redistribution of global resources.

The issue of the federalization of fragile and failed states.

The issue of the application of Responsibility to Protect.
All three are to some extent concerns with imbalances in power; therefore, it is imperative that the delegates overcome this issue and produce fruitful debate and creative solutions through cooperation and unity.
I hope the delegates can have a meaningful experience in this year’s UNISMUN, and I’m delighted to work with the delegates of the SC. See you all then!

Warm greetings to honorable directors, fellow chairs, distinguished delegates, and most esteemed guests!
I am Hien Nguyen, a junior at the United Nations International School of Hanoi, and the current Head of Marketing and Branding for UNISMUN Leadership. I would like to welcome schools to UNISMUN’s March 2023 conference at UNIS Hanoi as the Procedural Chair of the Security Council. This marks my 4th MUN conference and my first as a chair. I feel honored to be selected as a chair for this conference and I hope that all delegates, chairs, and directors will enjoy what we have in store for you!
With this year's UNISMUN theme being “What can we do to bring balance to the growing asymmetries of power?”, the Security Council has three topics that aim to help delegates research and understand the significance of maintaining international peace and security. I believe that maintaining the latter’s values in the United Nations is vital as all Member States are obligated to comply with Council decisions. Working in conjunction with the P5 nations can be challenging, yet eye-opening due to their ability to veto certain decisions.
This year, the Security Council will be focusing on the issues of the redistribution of global resources, the federalization of fragile and failed states, and the application of Responsibility to Protect. As the number of global conflicts has risen within the last decade, recognizing that they emerge due to power imbalances between parties is crucial when working toward a peaceful resolution.
I would like to encourage all participants to engage in a fruitful and insightful discussion, regardless of their experience! I’m looking forward to working with the delegates of the Security Council, thank you!
